Hereford Community Market Garden
Hereford Community MARKET GARDEN,
A joint venture between 'Growing Local is going Local' and the South Wye Development Trust.
Growing Local is CIC is proposing the establishment of a Community Market Garden close to the centre of Hereford to enable the growing of fruit and vegetables by members of the community for a community crop share scheme.
The garden would address the loss of local growers, connect the people of Hereford with their local fruit and vegetables and give control to the community of their fresh produce production.
We envisage a 10 acre market garden with 100 to 150 residents/ families becoming members and subscribing to the Veg Box scheme and/or volunteering their time. The garden would also incorporate an educational programme of cookery and gardening workshops and events for school children, young people, families and adults.
On Wednesday (19th Feb) we held a second public meeting to progress the ‘Hereford Community Market Garden’.We would like to say THANK YOU to the twenty five or so hardy souls who attended bringing a wealth of experience and energy to the proceedings. We also had a number of apologies and know that many people could not make this gathering. We would like to stress all planning meetings are open to everyone who wants to be involved.
During the meeting Pat, Lou and Heather reported back on progress made since the first meeting on Jan 8th. Lou reported on a weekend training course at Chagfood in Chagford, North Devon; a weekend of learning all about how to set up and scale up CSA projects (Community Supported Agriculture). Pat and Heather reported on their recent visit to Farnham Community Farm, a similarly inspiring CSA venture in Surrey. There have also been several meetings with the Council, Councillors and visits to potential sites.
The gathering then split into working groups, initially mind mapping the vision of OUR project, and then starting to look at some of the focus areas we need to consider as we move the project forward: The Land, Funding & Business Plan, the Legal Structure, Communications and Partnerships.
It was an exhilarating evening with plenty of fantastic discussion, inspiration and feedback. Many people at the meeting have offered to look at specific focus areas and will be reporting back on or before the next meeting, which we have set for Wednesday 1st April, again at 7pm at The Kindle Centre. ALL WELCOME!
If you did not attend our first meeting in January please do have a look at the presentation from the night, it's in PDF form on the Growing Local is Going Local website
Many thanks again, see you on April 1st.
